Submission Guidelines:
  • West Coast writers and artists only. This means currently living in AK, HI, WA, OR, or CA.

  • Submissions by snail mail only. Please do not use certified or registered mail.

  • Self-addressed stamped envelope required for a reply.

  • Do not submit manuscripts by e-mail. O.K. to query by e-mail. Do not phone.

  • Double-spaced is easier for us to read.

  • You may submit material of any length, and as many manuscripts as you would like. Take your best shot.

  • We respond promptly, but do not offer comments or suggestions.

  • We do not read simultaneous submissions, that is, material submitted at the same time to other editors.

  • We pay on acceptance an honorarium of $50, regardless of length or genre, plus seven author’s copies, for first North American serial rights (which means we are the first magazine on this continent to publish your piece). We reserve the right to include your piece in any anthology of ZYZZYVA material, and we reserve the right to put your piece up on our website. All other rights revert to you.

  • We do not commission work.

  • We are committed to reflecting the full range of talent in our neighborhood — many genres, many generations, many schools. We have published a wide range of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction.

  • We do not do interviews, reviews, or criticism. We do do translations, especially of Latin American and Asian writers.

  • We are not accepting novel manuscripts at this time.

  • Photographers and graphic artists: Submit scans only of work originally done in black & white on paper. 300 dpi, 5.5" wide. Only original artwork; no photos of paintings or sculpture or performances, please. Include caption information: title, year, medium, and dimensions. Say you’re thinking of publishing your short story collection. Instead of immediately publishing your book, you may want to submit individual stories to such respected literary journals or magazines as The Missouri Review or ZYZZYVA.

Letter to The New York Times
November 12, 2001

The slush pile of unsolicited manuscripts was in trouble with big-time publishers way before the anthrax attacks. There are just too many wannabes at large, some, but by no means all of them, churned out by the creative writing programs that have infested our universities and replaced English departments as the refuge of those who believe in expressing themselves.

And yet the slush pile is a most democratic institution, the literary equivalent of equal opportunity. We discard it at our peril.

I read everything sent to me, because I enjoy finding needles in haystacks and because, if I perform any useful function, it is giving new voices a chance to be heard.

          Editor, ZYZZYVA

Question:
In a letter to the NY Times in 2001, you stated that you read everything sent to you, which I assume is a great task. Do you have days when you just can't face another submission?

Howard’s Answer:
I like to go to work every day, since it’s so much like play. And I'm lucky that I don't get so many submissions each day that it becomes an unbearable chore. The hope that I'll find something wonderful spurs me on. I’m only sorry I have to tell so many writers I haven’t found their work “wonderful” enough for me. That’s pretty harsh, and has more to do with me and what I think ZYZZYVA needs than the work itself. I admire the tenacity of writers.

Left to right: slush pile, editor, recycling bin.
